About Portulaca Grandiflora: Portulaca Grandiflora or rose mose(shrub) is one of the best annual flowering plants. There are many common names like rose moss, Mexican rose, moss rose, the sun rose, and rock rose. Rose moss verities bloom different types of flowers like red, white, blue, purple, etc. the scientific name is Portulaca Grandiflora, and it belongs to the Portulacaceae family. Rose moss is native to many countries like Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, etc.

Physical View: The leaves of this plant are thick green in colour and grow up to 2 to 3 cm long. The branch of the plant is sepia colour, and there are at least 30 to 50 leaves on one branch. Rose moss grows up to 1 foot to 1.5 feet, and plants have lots of moisture, so there is no needs to give lots of water. Each sepal bloom one flower, and the bottom of the sepals have 6 to 8 leaves. Prepare a soil mixture: To make a soil mixture, take sand (50%) and any organic compost (50%). Mix it well, and the flower pot should be (12 inches wide with 5 to 6 inches in height). Keep the small gravel over the drainage holes and fill it with soil mixture. Give water thoroughly. Now take the seed and pour seeds on the soil. Cover the seeds with the soil mixture (Do not pour too much soil on the seed) and spray water thoroughly.

While planting: Make sure there is a drainage hole on the surface of the pot. If there is no drainage hole, make 5 to 6 holes in the flower pot. While mixing the soil potting, remove pebbles from the soil. Seeds’ distance should be 2 to 3 cm and make sure seeds do not overlap.

Within 15 to 20 days, germination starts from the seeds, and tiny leaves and branches appear from the plants. Keep flower pots in semi-shade places. One root germinates 4 to 5 branches, and if branches grow up to 3 to 4 inches, it’s time to transplant them separately.

How to transplant: For transplantation, we need to prepare a soil mixture.

Prepare a soil mixture for transplantation, take well-drained garden soil (50%), sand (20%), and organic compost (30% cow dung or coco peat). Mix it well, and for the best result, take the flower pot should be 7 to 8 inches.

Fill soil potting in the flower pot and take out 4 to 5 plants. Dig a hole 5 to 6 inches deep and put each plant in the hole. After all, cover the rooting point with the soil mixture. Keep plants in full sunlight.

Top 4 Caring Tips

Watering: Don’t overwater. While watering, check moisture in the soil, or if the top layer of soil is dry, then give water properly. Always use a water spray gun.

Temperature:  Before germination, keep plants in semi-shade places, and after transplantation, keep plants in full sunlight(at least 5 to 6 hours). In the winter season, keep plants in full sunlight or maintain temperatures between 15°C to 25°C. Always save from high temperatures (above 25°C) and heavy rain.  

Best Fertilizer: There is no need to give fertilizer before germination. Give fertilizer after 20 to 25 days and after fertilization, give water properly. The best fertilizer is cocopeat and vermicompost

Pruning: Pruning is important before the growing season. After transplantation, cut out the head part of the plants.

Different Types of Flowers

Bloom Time: Flowers bloom very quickly on this plant. Within 30 to 40 days, The flowers start blooming, and these flowers are of different colours like blue, red, white, pink, and purple. These flowers look beautiful. Flowers’s size grows up to 2 to 5 cm long and spread up to 2 cm wide. Each flower has 5 to 10 petals with a different colour.
