About Cuphea Hyssopifollia: Cuphea Hyssopifollia (Shrub)  is a perennial flowering plant and many types of flowers bloom on this plant. There are many varieties of this plant, such as Mexican heather, cuphea hybrid, candy cor, etc. The difference in all varieties is that some varieties grow faster, and some grow slowly.

Its scientific name is Cuphea, and it belongs to the Lythraceae family. In Lythraceae family have more than 250+ species worldwide. The leaves of this plant are dark green, and the size of the leaves grows up to 2 to 4 cm. Midribs are light white, and veins are green. The tip of the leaves is round in shape.

The branch is thin (sepia in colour), and the petiole is light yellow with a green shade depending on verities. Cuphea plant grows up to 2 feet to 4 feet and more.

How to plant seeds: There are two ways to grow this plant, one is by sowing the seed, and the other is by cutting its stem. In this post, we will know both ways.  Purchase seeds of this plant from the online shop or local plant shop, and late spring is the best time to plant its seeds.

Prepare a soil mixture: To make a soil mixture, take well-drained garden soil (50%), sand (30%), and vermicompost (20%). Mix it well and bring a small flower pot (at least 3 to 4 inches). Fill the soil mixture in the flower pot. Now pour the seeds over the soil and cover the seeds with the soil mixture.

After all, give water to the flower pot and place the flower pot in a semi-shade location. Within 20 to 25 days, germination starts from the seeds, and small branches and leaves appear from the plants, or sometimes it takes more time to germinate (it depends on verity).

When germination grows up to 3 to 4 inches, and more so, it’s time to transplant them separately. When you transplant a plant, make the same soil mixture and take a large flower pot ( at least 8 inches or a hanging flower pot).

While planting: The soil mixture should be slightly alkaline or neutral. Plants grow easily in the USDA hardiness zone 7-10. Check if there is a drainage hole at the bottom of the flower pot, if not make 4,5 holes at the bottom of the flower pot and place stones or pebbles on top of the hole.

How to plant Cutting: In this method use the same soil mixture.

To plant the cutting, cut off a thick stem of the plant, which should be 4 to 5 inches. Pour the cuttings 4 to 5 inches deep into the soil, pour the soil mixture near the stem, and press the soil mixture with your hand. After all, gives water correctly and place the pot in a shaded place.

Top Caring Tips

Watering: Don’t overwater, and while watering, check moisture in the soil. Plants need moisture in the soil. In the summer season, give water 3 to 5 times a week and during the winter season, twice per week. Always use a water spray gun.

Temperature:  Always keep this plant in a shaded area where the sunlight does not come direct. Keeping the plant in high sunlight causes the leaves/flowers to be dry and fade. Always maintain the temperature between 15°C to 30°C.

Best Fertilizer: Best fertilizer gives the best result, so always use the best fertilizer. Cuphea plants need cow dung or high nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer. Give fertilizer after 30 days, and after fertilizer, gives water properly.

Bloom Time: If you have sown its seeds, then within 4 to 5 months, the flowers start blooming, and these flowers are small in appearance. Flower colours are white, blue, pink, purple, or depending on verity. Every sepal has 5 to 6 petals, and the colour of petals depends on verity.
