About Canna Lilies: Canna lilies are one of the best flowering plants because flowers have different types of flower colours with different shades. It has large leaves with a round shape. One of the best parts of canna lilies is that, without flowers, their leaves look beautiful and attractive. The scientific name of canna lily is Canna, and it comes with the family of Cannaceae, Juss.

How to Plant rhizome at Home: You can plant canna lilies at home by using its seeds and rhizome. Rhizome plantation is straightforward because the rhizomes have sprouted part of the canna lily. Canna lily seeds take lots of time for germination. Seeds are tiny with 2 to 3mm long, and rhizomes have sprouted parts with 4 to 5 inches long. Rhizomes and seeds are easily available in local nurseries or online shops. Early summer is the best time for plantation.

Prepare a Soil Potting & Planting rhizome: To make good quality soil potting, take well-drained garden soil (45%), coco peat (30%), and vermicompost (25%) with 50gm of bone meal powder. Mix it well.

  • Take a large flowerpot (12 inches with 6 inches depth) and fill the soil mixture.
  • Dig a hole (5 to 6 inches deep) and take out the canna lilies rhizomes.
  • Put the rhizomes into those holes and cover the rhizomes with a soil mixture.
  • Don’t cover the sprouting part of rhizomes.
  • Give water properly and place the flowerpot in full sunlight or shaded area.

Within 4 to 5 days, new germination starts from the rhizomes and maintains moisture in the soil potting. During the germination period, canna lilies grow up to 6 to 8 inches, then transplant them into separate flowerpots.

Remember while planting: USDA hardiness zone should be 8-11 and the soil mixture should be slightly acidic. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 9 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. Use a clay flowerpot. The distance between the rhizomes should be 4 to 5 inches. In a single flower pot, plant only 2 rhizomes.

Transplantation: For transplantation, use the same soil potting with fungicide powder. Take a large flowerpot (size should be 15 to 16 inches with good drainage holes).
