About Coconut Tree: Coconut is one of the most growing fruits globally. It comes in two types of verities small and tall. Small verities are Malayan dwarf, Fiji. Tall verities are King, Maypan coconut, Macapuno…Etc. The scientific name of coconut is Cocos nucifera L, and it comes with the palm family (which is the Arecaceae family). These fruits have many benefits.

Benefits: Coconut fruit contains Vitamin C, B-6, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium…etc. It has 354 calories (100grams per fruit).

How to Plant Seeds in Flowerpot or Ground Site: Take one coconut (which is brown in colour) and remove all the grassy parts from the fruits. After that, keep the fruits in water (1 day only) and place the pot in an indoor location. Within one day, germination starts from the fruits, and new leaves appear from the fruits (which are green in colour).

After germinating fruits, we need to transplant them with a flowerpot. For the best result, choose the ground/garden site.

Remember: USDA hardiness zone should be 3-8. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 9 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. Use a ceramic flowerpot. In one flowerpot, plant only one fruit.

Transplantation: Take well-drained garden soil and a large flower pot (size should be 10 to 12 inches with 10 inches depth). Fill the soil mixture into the flowerpot, dig a hole (by 5 to 7 inches), put the germinate fruits in those holes, and cover the fruits with the soil mixture (germinate part should be up). Give water properly and place the flowerpot in full sunlight.

Within 4 to 5 weeks, new leaves and stems appear from the plants, and the leaves’ size grows up to 10 to 15 inches with spread up to 4 to 5 inches. For best growth, keep the plants in full sunlight.

Top 3 Caring Tips

  • Watering: Don’t overwater. Before germination of the coconut fruit, keep the fruits in water and after transplantation, keep well moisture in soil potting or during the summer season, give water after 1 to 2 days. During the winter season or monsoon season, give water after 3 to 4 days.
  • Temperature: Maintaining temperature is very important for plant growth, and coconut plants need full sunlight for their growth. During the summer or winter season, keep the plants in morning sunlight (The whole day, plants need 5 to 7 hours of sunlight).
  • Best Fertilizer: If the plant’s growth is stuck, then you can use cow dung fertilizer or home-based fertilizer. Most of the cultivators are used cow dung or neem Khali fertilizer.

Flowering Time: It takes a lot of time for the flowers to bloom on the plant. After 15 to 20 years of plantation, flowers start to bloom on the plant. These flowers are light yellow with a wheat shape and grow up to 10 to 15 inches (spread 20 to 25 inches).

Season of Fruits: The fruits on the tree start coming in the monsoon season/after flowering, and there are more than 70+ coconut fruits on the tree at one time. Fruits are green in colour with a yellow shade (round shape). Over time, fruits grow up to 7 to 10 inches with spread up to 6 to 9 inches.
