How to Plant Sunflower at Home | Care & Benefits

About Sunflower: Sunflower is a summer-flowering plant, and yellow flowers bloom on the plant. The sunflower is the national flower of India. The scientific name is Helianthus, and it belongs to the Asteraceae family. The sunflower plant grows up to 10 feet, and another variety is growing up to 12 to 15 feet.

How to plant at home: There are two ways to grow seeds, one is direct immerse the seeds into the soil, and another is to keep seeds in water for at least 2 to 3 hours. Learn both methods to grow seeds—the best time to plant seeds is in March or April.

Now prepare a soil mixture:  To prepare a soil mixture, take well-drained garden soil (40%), coco peat (30%), and vermicompost (30%). Mix it well, and the flower size should be 4 inches, or it depends on your choice. Make sure a drainage hole is available at the bottom of the flower pot. If there is no drainage hole, make (4 to 5 drainage holes) with any garden tool.

Fill the soil mixture (60 to 70%) in the flower pot and spray water in the soil so that the soil settles down after taking out the sunflower seeds, pouring them above the soil mixture, and filling the 2 to 3-inch layer of soil. After all, give water properly and place the flower pot in an indoor or shaded location.

After 7 to 8 days, germination starts from the seeds, and after germination, keep the plant in sunlight. Sometimes the germination period takes more time to germinate seeds, or it depends on your planted variety. Within 20 to 30 days, plants grow up to 4 to 5 inches, and it’s time to transplant them separately.

While planting: Always use a clay pot and the soil should be slightly alkaline or acidic. Initially used a small flower pot and USDA hardiness zone 3-9.      

The second method to plant seeds is to keep the seed in water for 2 to 3 hours. After that, please take out the seeds and clean them with tissue paper or paper. Take the same soil mixture and pour seeds into the soil. Fill the 2 to 3-inch layer of soil and give water properly. Keep the flower pot in an indoor location before germination and after germination, place it in the sunlight.

Top Care Tips For Sunflower

Watering:  Don’t overwater before germination. After germination, always keep moisture in the soil. Give water properly during the summer and winter seasons, or check moisture before watering after 2 to 3 days.

Temperature: Temperature is an essential part of growing plants. After germination, place the plant in full sunlight or give sunlight at least 6 to 7 hours during the summer season. In the Winter season, always plants keep in sunlight.

Best Fertilizer: Every month, fertilize this plant. Always use the best fertilizer (which is rich in nitrogen) to grow a plant. After fertilization, give water to the plant because by doing this fertilizer settled mix with the soil.

Pests & Disease: there are many types of insects (aphids, mealybug, beetles, bees) that are damaging the plants, so always use pesticide liquid to kill them. Before spraying the medicine in the plant, please read the instruction given on the medicine.

Bloom Time: Flowers start to bloom on the plant after 3 or 4 months, and these flowers look beautiful and attract many birds. The flowers’ colours are yellow.
