Night Star Jasmine: Night Star Jasmine is an evergreen flowering plant, or it is also known as a lady of the night, night-blooming jasmine, night-scented jasmine, and poison berry. You can plant it any season, but the rainy season is the best. Night star jasmine flowers bloom in the night with a sweet aroma smell. In the flowering season, it blooms lots of flowers at night. Flower colours are greenish-white with five lobes. Leaves are glossy green, growing up to 3 to 4 inches with a spread up to 2 inches.
Over time, plants/shrubs grow up to 6 to 12 feet tall with spread up to 2 to 3 feet wide. It also gives fruits, which are small (white) with a round shape. The scientific name of night-blooming jasmine is Cestrum nocturnum, and it comes with the Solanaceae family.
How to Plant Seeds and Cutting : There are two types of methods for plantation, one is by using seeds, and another is by using cutting. Seeds are light brown in colour with a heart shape, and the size of the seeds is 1 to 2 cm long, and seeds are available inside the pod and are light in weight. Seeds and plants are easily available in local nurseries and online stores.
Prepare a Soil Potting : To make a good quality soil potting, take normal garden soil (50%), coco peat (30%), and compost (20%). Mix it well and take a small flowerpot (size should be 6 to 8 inches).
Planting Seeds (Follow these steps):
- Fill the soil mixture into the flowerpot.
- Take out the seeds pod and remove all seeds from the pods.
- Dig a hole (1 to 2 inches deep) and put the seeds into those holes.
- Cover the seeds with the same soil mixture.
- Give some water and cover the pot with any polybag.
- Keep the pot in a semi-shaded location.
Within 7 to 8 days, germination starts from the seeds, and new leaves and stems appear from the seed (plants). If the soil mixture is dried, then give some water. After germination of seeds, remove the polybag from the flowerpot.
The second way for Seedlings:
- Take out the seeds and 1 or 2 pieces of tissue paper.
- Cover the seeds inside the tissue paper and spray some water.
- Cover the tissue paper with any polybag or poly-zip bag.
- Pour some water into the polybag.
- Place the polybag in the semi-shaded location.
- Within 5 to 7 days, germination starts from the seeds.
How to Transplant: For best growth, transplantation is necessary. If plants grow up to 5 to 6 inches, then it is a good time for transplantation. Take out the well-drained garden soil (50%), cow dung (30%), and sand (20%). Mix it well and take a ceramic flowerpot (size at least 8 to 10 inches). Remove all the plants from the old flowerpot and poly-zip bag. Plant all the plants 2 to 4 inches deep.
Remember while plantation: USDA hardiness zone should be 9-11, and soil mixture should be slightly acidic. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 9 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. Use a ceramic flowerpot. The distance between the seeds should be 1 to 2 inches.
How to Plant Cutting: Take out the 6 to 8 inches bobbing from mature plants or local nurseries. Always cut the thick part of stems with 2 to 5 leaves. Dip the cutting from rootex liquid or rootex powder. Rootex is necessary for cutting germination. Use the same soil mixture and plant 3 to 4 inches deep.
How to Care with 5 Tricks
- Watering: Give water after 3 to 5 days if the top layer of soil mixture is dried. During the winter season, give water once a week, and don’t overwater during the summer or winter season.
- Temperature: For the best result, keep the night star jasmine in a semi-shaded location (summer season). During the winter season, keep the plants in full sunlight, or you can maintain the temperature between 15°C to 20°C.
- Best Fertilizer for Plants: For best growth, compost is necessary, or night star jasmine needs fish emulsion fertilizer and cow dung before the growing season. Add 1 to 2 layers of fish emulsion or vermicompost after 40 to 45 days.
- Pests & Diseases: Mostly, mealy bugs, leaf miners, and root fungus attack the plants. Always use pesticide liquid to kill insects and diseases.
- Pruning: Before the growing season, pinch out the faded flowers, dry leaves, and unwanted flowers.
Flowering Season: Within 3 to 4 months, flowers start blooming on the plant (October or November).
