About Periwinkle: Periwinkle is one of the best summer flowering plants, it is also known as the Sadabahar plant. Sadabahar plants are easily found in many homes, gardens, and offices. It gives lots of flowers at a time, and these flowers break off after flowering (after 1 to 2 days). The scientific name is Vinca, and it comes with the Apocynaceae family. It has many types of verities like Myrtle, Greater, Vinca herbaceous, and Vinca difformiss.

How to Plant Seeds in Flowerpot: You can plant periwinkle/sadabahar by using seeds or cutting. In this post, we will know both methods.

Planting By Using Seeds: Using seeds is a simple method but takes a lot of time for germination. Seeds are tiny (size 4 to 5 mm long) and black in colour.

Prepare a soil potting: To make a good quality soil potting, take well-drained garden soil (40%), organic compost (cow dung & vermicompost (30%)), and sand (30%). Mix it well and take a small flowerpot (size should be 6 to 8 inches with a depth of 4 inches).

  • Fill the soil mixture into the flowerpot.
  • Take out the seeds and spray on the soil potting.
  • Cover the seeds with the soil mixture and give water properly.
  • Place the flowerpot in a semi-shaded location (until germination).

Within 15 to 20 days, germination starts from the seeds and tiny leaves (3 to 4 leaves) appear from the seeds. Maintain soil moisture until the plants grow up to 4 to 5 inches.

Transplantation: If the plants grow up to 4 to 5 inches, then it’s time to transplant them with a separate flowerpot. Use the same soil mixture (while we are planting seeds) and keep the plants in full sunlight.

Remember: USDA hardiness zone should be 5-8 and the soil mixture should be slightly acidic. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 9 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. For the best result, use a clay flowerpot. The distance between the seeds should be 1 inch.

Planting By Using Cutting Methods: Cut out the 4 to 5 stems from periwinkle plants. Take one flowerpot (size should be large). Use garden soil with vermicompost or cow dung (50-50). Mix it well.

  • Fill the soil mixture into the flowerpot.
  • Take out the cutting and dig a hole (4 to 5 holes) in the soil mixture.
  • Put the cutting (2 inches deep) into those holes and cover the bottom part with soil mixture.
  • Give some water and place the plants in full sunlight.

Within 5 to 7 days, new leaves and roots are germinated from the cutting. Keep the plants in full sunlight.

Top 4 Caring Tips :

  • Watering: Until germination of seeds, keep the moisture in potting. After germination of seeds or transplantation, give water after 2 to 4 days. During the summer season, give water after 1 to 3 days and twice a week in the winter season.
  • Temperature: Well, temperature gives the best result. During the summer season (March to July), keep the plants in full sunlight (4 to 5 hours only). Recommended temperature is 20°C to 25°C.
  • Best Fertilizer: For best growth, use bone meal or organic fertilizer (cow dung and vermicompost). After 30 to 45 days, give fertilizer properly. After fertilization, give water.
  • Pruning & Cutting: Pruning and cutting are essential tasks for the best results. Before the growing season, pinch out the dry leaves, faded flowers, and dry branches. For cutting, use cutting tools.

Flowering Season: After 5 to 6 months of planting, the flowers start blooming on the plant, and the flowers are in many colours such as white, red, purple, blue… etc. The colour of the flowers depends on the varieties. Each flower has five petals, and the centre parts differ in colour.
