Pointed Gourd – A Unfailing Vegetable
Pointed Gourd is one of the popular and perennial vegetable in the market. It comes with many vitamins and lots of healthiest benefits. It is also known as palwal, parwal, potol, and permalin. Parwal is dark to light green with size grow up to 2 to 5 inches long with cylindrical shape. It has number of white strips with green shade. Parwal has many uses in the Indian dishes.
- Parwal is easily available in the market with starting price of Rs 20+ rupees per half kg.
- Parwal has a rough exterior and contains many white seeds.
- Most of the time it is also known as green potato (In most of the cities).
- Popular parwal agriculture states in India like UP, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, and Bengal.
- The scientific name of pointed gourd is Trichosanthes dioica and it belongs to the Cucurbitaceae
- In Bangladesh and West Bengal, it is used as a energizing summer vegetable.

Seedling Tips: We can do two types of parwal plantations like by using seeds or you can buy grafted pointed gourd plant. Your soil media should be well drained and pH should be 5.5-6.5. let’s prepare the soil mixture for seedling…
- Buy garden soil + vermicompost + cow dung manure + cocopeat.
- Mix it well and take small ceramic flower pot.
- Parwal seeds looks like white creamy shades with size up to 10mm long.
- Fill soil mixture in container and take out the parwal seeds.
- Create small pits in the soil and plant all the seeds at a sweep of 2 inches.
- Cover all the seeds with same soil potting and spray water properly (not thoroughly).
- Retain the container in full daylight until germination.
- Germination occurs within 7 to 12 days. After germination, you need to repot all plants with separate pot. Make proper soil mixture with same ingredient.
Note: Container should have proper drainage holes and put small stones or grenade into those holes (while filling soil). Parwal seeds are easily germinate in USDA hardiness zones 7-11. For best results, plant 7 to 10 seeds in a single pot.
How to Get Lots of Pointed Gourd at Home Plantation

Mulching: Mulching is an important task when raising plants or seeds. Mulching gives your garden a sort of fodder. Do proper mulching and watering properly every month.
Sunlight or Daylight: For the awesome results, keep all the parwal plants in full sunlight. Keep away from heavy temperature. Above 45°C temperature, leaves start to burn and plants may die. You need to maintain all parwal plants under 45°C. GardenOnTop recommended temperature is 20°C to 35°C.
Water Time: Do not water during germination, just keep the soil moist. After successful repotting, water properly. Early morning is the best time for irrigation. Water twice a day in summer or once in winter. Use water spray tank. Spray water tank are easily available at online or offline shops.
Composition or Fertilization: Best fertilizers gives best results. Many types of fertilizers are available at market but you need to purchase, All-in-One vermicompost and Cow Dung manure. These two fertilizers give best result within the same day. Every 30 days, do proper composition. After composition, watering is necessary.
Diseases or Alimentation: If parwal leaves and branches are attacked by small insects and root rot, root fungus is caused by over watering. So, always avoid over watering and maintain good soil moisture. If there is root rot and fungus in soil, give fungicide powder with water and spray insecticide liquid to kill insects.
Pruning or Cutting: You ought not to prune the Parval plant in any season. Extract all wilted leaves, insect leaves, dry branches…etc. Do this with pruners.
Best Time for Harvesting: If your sowing is done in February to March, then the fruits of Parwal start in the month of September or November. Matured size of pointed gourd is 4 to 6 inches long. Just need to maintain water and composition at your plants.
