Simple Way To Grow Blanket Flower Plants at Home

About Blanket Flower Plant: Gaillardia is one of the best popular flowering plants for many gardeners, and Gaillardia, which is the common name, is a blanket purple with different shades.

Gaillardia has different types of verities like Arizonea sun, Burgundy, Fanfare, Goblin, and Firewheel. The scientific name of the Blanket plant is Gaillardia, and it comes with the Asteraceae family.

Physical look: Gaillardia plant grows up to 6 to 12 inches and spreads up to 12 to 20 inches. Some varieties of gaillardia plants grow up to 18 to 20 inches and spread 25 inches wide. The leaves of the plant are soft and green with a tendon shape. Leaves size grow up to 3 to 4 inches and spread up to 1 inch.

Midribs of leaves are off-white, and veins are light green. Branches are thin and green. Branches and leaves have lots of moisture. So there is no need to give lots of water.

How to plant at home: There are many verities of gaillardia plants, but the growing methods are the same. In this post, we will know how to plant its seeds. You can buy its seeds from an online store or local nursery—the best time to sow seeds is in January or February.

Best Location: Garden on Top says, place this plant on the balcony, terrace, centre of hall and side of walls.

Prepare a soil mixture: Make a soil mixture, take coco peat (30%), vermicompost (30%), well-drained garden soil (20%), and cow dung (20%). Mix it well and take a flower pot (size at least 8 to 10 inches more). Fill the pot with soil mixture (80%), take out the seeds, and put them on the soil.

Cover the seeds with the remaining soil mixture and spray water properly. Cover the top layer of soil potting with polythene or any other garden accessories. Place the flower pot in a semi-shaded area.

Within 4 to 5 days, germination starts from the seeds, and tiny leaves (2 to 3 mm in size) appear from the plants. After 10 to 15 days, leaves grow up to 10 mm to 15 mm and branches 1 inch. If germination grows up to 2 to 3 inches and 8 to 10 leaves appear from the plants, then it’s time to transplant them separately with a separate flower pot (it is necessary).

How to Transplant: Prepare a soil mixture using the same soil mixture, and the flower pot should be large. In a one flower pot plant, only 7 to 8 plants only. Fill the soil mixture in the flower pot and dig a hole 5 to 7 inches deep. Take plants and put them in holes.

Cover the root parts with soil potting and press the soil near the plants. Spray water properly and place the plants in full sunlight. Within 7 to 9 days, new leaves and branches appear from the plants.

Remember: While soil mixing, remove all small stones and pebbles. Check drainage hole in the surface of the flower pot, if there is no drainage holes make 5, or 6 holes. The soil mixture should be slightly acidic (6-7) and USDA hardiness zone 4 to 10.

Top 3 Caring Tips :

Watering: Don’t overwater. This is a summer-flowering plant, so the plant needs moisture in the soil. Before germination, give water after 3 to 4 days and after germination, keep moisture in the soil. For watering, always use a spray water gun.

Temperature:  Plants need full sunlight for the best result. Always maintain the temperature between 15°C to 30°C. Due to the high temperature, the flowers and leaves of the plants faded and dried. Always save plants from high temperature and heavy rain.

Best Fertilizer: Always use the best fertilizer like coco peat or cow dung for best results. After 30 to 45 days, give fertilizer to the plants and after fertilization, give water properly.

Bloom Time: Summer flowering plants give the best result in May to August. Within 45 days, Flowers start blooming on this plant, and these flowers are beautiful and attractive because of different types of flowers with different shades. Each flower has 15 to 30 petals (single layer). The Center part of flowers is different in colour, or it depends on verity. Flowers spread up to 1 to 2 inches.
