  • About chikoo
  • How to plant seeds at home
  • Top 4 caring tips
  • Fruit season

About Chikoo (Sapota): Chikoo is one of the best sweetest fruit in the family of Sapotaceae. There are many common names like sapodilla, sapota, and nispero, and it is an evergreen plant. It has many varieties like Kalipatti, Cricket ball, Murabba, Pala, Guthi, and Baramasi, and these all the varieties are cultivated in different cities. It is native to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The scientific name is Manilkara zapota, and it comes with the Sapotaceae family. Over time, plants grow up to 40 to 45 feet, spread up to 10 to 15 feet, and fruit size grows up to 2 to 3 inches with a round shape.

How to Plant Seeds at Home: We have three methods to plant chikoo seeds. Take out the ripened chikoo and remove the seeds. One fruit has 2 to 3 seeds, which are black in colour and size 2 to 3 cm long. The rainy season is the best time for plantation.

First Way for Plantation :

  • Take the chikoo seeds and clean them with water
  • Now wrap the seeds in tissue paper and spray water on the paper (do not spray more water)
  • Cover the paper with a polybag
  • Place the polybag in the indoor location (till germination)
  • After germination, please take out the germination plants and transplant them.
  • For transplantation, use garden soil with cow dung or the vermicompost and a 5 to 7 inches flowerpot.
  •  Place the pot in full sunlight.

Second Way for Plantation:  We need to prepare a good quality soil potting and clay flowerpot.

  • Take out the garden soil (70%) and vermicompost (30%) to make a soil mixture.
  • Mix it well and remove the small pebbles and stones.
  • Fill the soil mixture into a flowerpot (85%) and push the soil mixture with your hand (remove soil air)
  • Dig a hole into the soil, put the seeds into the soil, and cover the seeds with soil mixture.

Transplantation: We need to prepare a soil mixture.

  • Take out the well-drained garden soil (60%), cow dung (20%), vermicompost (20%), Mustard cake powder (50gm), and neem cake power (for root fungus).
  • Mix it well and take out the large flowerpot (12 to 15 inches).
  • Fill the soil mixture into a flowerpot, dig a hole (4 to 5 inches deep), and put the plants into the holes.
  • Cover the roots with a soil mixture and give some water.
  • Place the plants in the indoor location until plants do not grow up to 5 to 7 inches.

While Planting: USDA hardiness zone should be 4-10. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 9 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. Use a ceramic flowerpot. The distance between the cutting should be 2 to 3 inches.

Third Way for Plantation: Most used method and fruits come quickly by this method. Take the moss grass and keep it in water for 2 to 3 hours. Take out the chikoo seeds and cover them with moss grass. Within 7 to 8 days, germination starts from the seeds and after that, use transplantation methods.

Best 4 Caring Tips

Watering: Always maintain moisture in the soil, do not add too much water, and check the top layer of the soil potting before giving water. Rainwater gives the best results.

Temperature: Maintaining temperature is good for the best result, maintaining the temperature between15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Save the plants from high temperatures or heavy rain.

Top-quality fertilizer: Before germination of seeds, do not give any type of fertilizer. After germination of seeds or transplantation, add cow dung or vermicompost with soil potting. After 50 to 60 days, give fertilizer properly. Don’t forget to give fertilizer before the growing season. After fertilization, give a water well.

Pests & Diseases: If any types of insects or fungus occur in the rooting part or plants, then spray pesticide medicine immediately. You can use neem oil.

Fruit’s Time: The flowers bloom on the plant after 3 to 4 years, and after that, the fruits start growing. Most of the varieties take 5 to 6 years to flower, so be patient or always maintain the caring tips.
