About Elm Tree: The elm tree is one of the largest trees in the family of Ulmaceae. Over time, the tree grows up to 50 to 60 feet tall and spread to 10 to 15 feet wide. Ulmaceae family has 30+ species worldwide. Elm tree seeds are easy to grow in well-drained soil potting and give the best result in full sunlight. The scientific name of the elm tree is Ulmus, and it comes with the Ulmaceae family. The elm tree is first seen 20M years ago in Central Asia.

How to Plant in Garden and Home: One of the best methods to plant elm plants is by using its seeds and grafted plants. Seeds take lots of time for germination, but grafted plants are easy to transplant. In this post, we will know both methods, seedling and grafted. Seeds are light sepia in colour with a round shape, and the size of the seeds is 5 to 6 mm long. Seeds are easily available in the local shops or online stored.

Prepare a Soil Potting with Planting Seeds: To make a soil potting, normal garden soil (50%), sand (30%), and coco peat (20%). Seeds are covered with flowers and mix it well. For seedlings, take a medium-size flowerpot (size at least 8 to 10 inches wide).

  • Fill the soil mixture into the flowerpot.
  • Take out the seeds and spray on the soil potting.
  • Cover the seeds with the same soil mixture.
  • Place the flowerpot in an indoor location or semi-shaded location.

Within 6 to 8 days, germination starts from the seeds, and 2 to 3 leaves appear from the germinated plants. After germination of seeds, keep the plants in full sunlight. If plants grow up to 7 to 8 inches with 5 to 6 leaves, then it’s time to transplant them into a separate flowerpot.

Remember:  USDA hardiness zone should be 4-10 and soil mixture slightly wet. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 7 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. Use a ceramic flowerpot. The distance between the seeds should be 2 to 4 cm.

How to Plant Grafted Plants: Mature size of grafted plants should be 8 to 10 inches tall with 5 to 6 inches wide. For transplantation, choose the ground site. Over time, grafted plants take lots of space (there is no need to transplant them again). Use the same soil mixture like garden soil, sand, and coco peat. Plant the grafted plants 10 to 12 inches deep and cover the rooting system with soil.

How to Care for Elm Tree

  • Watering: Maintain the moisture in the soil potting. Before the germination of seeds, check the top layer of the soil mixture. If the soil is dried, then give water properly.
  • Temperature: Keep the plants in full sunlight (at least 5 to 6 hours). Before sprouting seeds, keep the plants in semi-shaded locations or always maintain the plants at 15°C to 30°C.
  • Best Compost for Growing: Compost is necessary before the growing season. After 40 to 45 days, give fertilizer like cow dung. After fertilization, give water properly.
  • Pruning & Cutting: Prune the plants before the autumn season or growing season. Cut out the faded leaves and unwanted branches.

Benefits of Tree: There are loads of benefits of the tree, but we are showing only the Top 3 benefits of the tree
