About Gul Mehndi: There are many types of verities of Gul mehndi or Balsam plants, but common verities are Rose Balsam, Tall Double, and Dwarf Brush Flowers. Rose balsam verities are easily available in local nurseries or online stores. Balsam flowering plants come in the Balsaminaceae family, and its scientific name is Impatiens balsamina. Balsam plants are native to Myanmar (India). Over time, plants grow up to 3 to 8 feet tall and spread up to 3 to 5 feet.

How to Plant Seeds in Flowerpot: There are two types of methods to plant Gul mehndi Plants. One is by using seeds, and another is by using cutting. In this post, we will know about both methods. Gul mehndi seeds are tiny and grey in colour, and the size of seeds is 2 to 3 mm long with a round shape. Seeds are easily available in nurseries or online shops. Summer is the best time for seedlings.

Prepare a Soil Potting: Balsam seeds are easy to grow and easy to care for plants. To make a good quality soil mixture, take garden soil (70%), compost (10%), and sand (20%). Mix it well.

Take out the medium flowerpot (size at least 8 inches).
Fill the soil mixture into a flowerpot and spray some water.
Please take out the seeds and spray them on the soil.
Cover the seeds with the same soil mixture.
Give water properly and place the flowerpot in an indoor location or shaded area.

Within 2 to 3 days, germination begins from the seed, and new stems and small leaves appear from the seed. You can plant 10 to 15 seeds (8 to 10 inches). If the plants grow up to 5 to 6 inches, then it’s time to transplant them with a separate flowerpot or ground site. For best growth, choose the ground site.

Remember while preparing soil potting: USDA hardiness zone should be 3-11. In a flowerpot, make sure drainage holes are available or not. If there are no holes at the surface, then make 5 to 9 holes (Drainage holes are necessary). Cover the holes with a grenade or stones. Use a clay flowerpot. The distance between the seeds should be 5 to 10 cm.

How to Transplant: For transplantation, use garden soil (60%), cow dung (20%), sand (15%) and pesticide powder (5%). Pesticide powder is necessary, as plants wither for a few days after transplanting. Mix it well.

Fill the soil mixture into the flowerpot.
Remove all the plants from the old flowerpot.
Dig a-holes (3 to 4 inches deep), take plants one by one, and put the plants into those holes.
Cover the rooting system with the same soil mixture.
Give water properly and place the plants in a shaded location.
After transplantation, new leaves start after 3 to 4 days.

How to Plant Cutting: If you have a mature plant, which is up to 3 to 5 feet tall. Cut the head of the stem/stalk from that plant. Use garden soil (60%) with coco peat (40%) and add 20gm of pesticide powder. Mix it well and follow transplantation steps (see above).

Watering: Don’t overwater. Before watering, check the top layer of soil potting. If soil is dried, then give water properly (because Gul mehndi summer flowering plants).
Temperature: For best growth, keep the plants in a shady area, where the sunshine is good, or you can maintain a temperature between 15°C to 30°C.

Pests & Diseases: Over time, many types of insects (mealy bugs, aphids, bees) and diseases attack the plants. Spray a pesticide liquid on the plant to kill those insects and diseases. Before spraying medicine on the plants, read the instruction on the treatment.
Pruning & Cutting Time: Before the flowering season, pruning is necessary.

Flowering Season: After 3 to 5 months of sowing the seeds, flowers start blooming on the plant, and these flowers are red, pink, and white in colour. If the flowers are not blooming on the plant, give perlite to the plants.
