About Turmeric: Turmeric is a perennial flowering plant, and its roots are used as spices and herbs for cooking purposes. It is similar to ginger plants and is native to the Indian subcontinent. It is yellow in colour, and in the market, it is sold in a deep orange powder form, raw and ripened. Turmeric taste is a tart, bitter flavour. The best time for plantation is May or June.

The scientific name of turmeric is Curcuma longa and it comes with the ginger family, which is Zingiberaceae.

Best Trick for Growing: Take out the 2 to 4 raw turmeric pieces 2 to 3 inches long. Turmeric pieces are similar to ginger and arbi. If you have turmeric with sprouting parts so, it is easily growing in soil potting. Soil potting is important for turmeric plants, and plants grow up to 1 meter tall.

Prepare a Soil Potting: To make a good quality soil potting, take out the garden soil (50%), fully decomposed cow dung (30%), and sand (20%). Mix it well and take grow bag or flowerpot (size should be 12 inches wide with 10 inches in depth). Follow the steps for plantation:-

  • Fill the soil mixture into the grow bag or flowerpot.
  • Take out the turmeric pieces.
  • Dig a-holes (2 to 3 inches deep) into the soil mixture.
  • Plant the turmeric pieces into that holes.
  • Cover all the pieces with the same soil mixture.
  • Give water properly and cover the bag or flowerpot with any polythene.
  • Place the flowerpot in the full sunlight or greenhouse.

Turmeric easily grows in full sunlight or in semi-shaded locations, but it gives the best results in full sunlight. Within 10 to 15 days, sprouting starts from the pieces, and during the germination, don’t give water. If you have planted them in a large flowerpot, there is no need to transplant them in any other flowerpot.

Top 4 Caring Tips and Tricks

  • How to Give Water: Watering is essential when we plant turmeric pieces, and watering is important when the top layer of soil potting is dries up. Always use the spray gun water. Give water daily during the summer season because the temperature is high (maybe 30°C).
  • Maintain Temperature: Keep the plants in full sunlight for at least 4 to 6 hours during the summer season. Morning sunlight is important for growing turmeric plants, or you can maintain the temperature below 30°C. Above 30°C temperature, leaves start to burn.
  • Which Fertilizer Use: Fertilizer is necessary during the growing season, or you can add vermicompost and cow dung fertilizer after 30 to 40 days. After fertilization, watering is necessary. This fertilizer is easily available in local nurseries or online stores.
  • Pests and Diseases: Overwatering causes many types of diseases like rot, and over time, leaves start to burn (always use pesticide liquid or neem oil). If any insects like aphids, mealy bugs, snails, and slugs appear on the plants, don’t forget to spray medicine on the plants.

Best Time for Harvesting: Within 5 to 6 months of the plantation, flowering starts on the turmeric plants. After flowering, you can check the size of the turmeric. If it is 4 to 5 inches, you can harvest them or wait for more size.
